Tli>: -sday. v A working profit of £118,778 is shown by the- Railway Department's accounts for the, firstfour weeks, . ended April 26, v:i-r of the new financial year. ■ This period in-\ eludes five days of the strike,- which continued for three days beyond that covered V by the present return. Nevertheless, the .• profits were higher than in the corresponding .«period of last year, when•• <;, £108,197 were earned. , : The increase Is, of courefij chiefly attributable to the fact / that Easter fell in April this year, whereas last year the March period included Easter.' The gross .earnings, for the , period were i £473,304j •a' decrease of r £23,702, - while >;* expenses were £353,526, a decline b of; £32,283.
