PRISONERS SENTENCED.
GRANTING OF PROBATION, j. . .. _ r) ,: PROVISION AGAINST DRINK v The decision of the Supreme Court in • respect of the case of William Spooneir who was convicted last week of common assault, upon an indictment charging him with assault with intent, was given by Mr. Justice Stringer yesterday. The probation officer reported that thrt prisoner, who had a wife and large family was addicted to drink. His Honor expressed the opinion that the jury would have been warranted in covicting accused on the major charge. As regards the penalty, he intended to make sure that prisoner should nob waste on liquor substance that ought to belong to his household. In placing tho prisoner on probation for two years, the Court accordingly added to the usual statutory conditions a direction that he must obtain a prohibition order against himself.
Walter Vincent, the Lancashire man, who was convicted last week of betting frauds, and as to whoie antecedents in-* formation is being sought from Home, wan remanded for another week,
