THE KARITANE HOME.
EXTENSIVE ALTERATIONS. NEW WORK TO COST £4975. Extensive alterations and additions are being mads to the property at Mount Albert, presented by Mr. A. C. Caughey, to adapt it for the purposes of the Karitane Home, for the establishment of which the Plunket Society conducted a successful campaign last year. They comprise considerable modifications and extensions of the main building, and the erection of two detached buildings, in--1 eluding the installation of modern equipi ment on a large scale.. The whole work I has been planned by the honorary archi- . tects, Messrs. Chilwell and Trevethick, , and tha committee has accepted the tender of Mr. N. Cole for £4975. * The ground floor will contain three ' wards for with a large bathroom, 5 and beyond it a steam-heated ward for > premature babies, the preservation of , which has been a distinctive feature in I the success of the original Karitane Homo in Dunedin. The kitchen block on the ground floor will bo and beyond it will be constructed a milk-room, designed to ensure perfect ventilation and hygienic conditions. The alterations on the first floor will be chiefly the subdivision of large apartments to provide 11 bedrooms for nurses _ and trainees, while the domestic staff will be accommodated on the second floor. Detached from the main building will be a small isolation block, containing two wards, and a rest home for mothers. _ The latter, an important feature of the institution, will bo a self-contained department, containing four bedrooms, sitting ' room, and independent domestic offices. r It is expected that the completion of ' the alterations and additions and the furI nishing of the home will occupy about r five months.
