MOUNT EDEN AND CITY

AMALGAMATION POLL LOST.

1645 AGAINST; 1110 FOR. COMMENT BY THE MAYOR. The poll of burgesses in the borough of .Mount Eden on the proposal that that district, should , amalgamate : with the city, was held yesterday, the proposal being lost by a large majority. The voting was as follows: — . * _ Against the proposal ... 1645 For the proposal, ... ... 1110 Majority against ... 535 The polling was very small, as the number of electors on 'the roll is about 8000. The result of the poll was announced from the steps of the Borough Council office at about 8.45 p.m., and was received with cheers. '

The Mayor of Mount Eden, Mr, E. H. Potter, discussing the matter subsequently, said The result of.the poll is an emphatic declaration of the, electors' opinion. The poll would probably have been much larger but for the presence of the Fleet, and, in that case, the majority would, I am sure, have been even more emphatic. I hope the council will now be left alone to proceed with the many works it has in hand."
