SAFETY ZONE LIGHTING.
LORRY-DRIVERS' DESIRE. ; The lorry drivers of , Auckland are voicing their protest at the menace which they say/ arises from the non.-lighting of the tramway safety / zones; . Mr., William Barr, on behalf of the ; Auckland Lorry Drivers'; Union v; yesterday, urged V the necessity for the zones' being illuminated at night. He emphasised that the Graystatue was removed ; from : : Queen Street to prevent a possible street accident. Yet," following, upon that - admittedly wise action, the City Council: erected a number of safety zones which, in the view' of lorry drivers, were far more dangerous to motor traffic "at night-time, particularly in wet weather. As indicating the difficulty he cited) the instance of a tramoverhead repair waggon,' that' re- ■ cently collided with a safety zone in I ICarangahape Road. ■ .The lorry drivers fear a continuance of euch casualties if steps are not taken for effectively indicating the position of the. zones by lights.
