A STRANDED IMMIGRANT.
MISLED IN ENGLAND.
POSITION WITHOUT FOUNDATION.
fBY TELEUKAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] PALMERSTON NORTH, Tuesday. • An unusual set of circumstances was revealed in the Magistrate's : Court to-day when an engineer was sued for rent. Counsel for defendant said his client came out from England a3 an ; immigrant, believing • that a position - as , gas-works manager at Nelson awaited him 1 there. The New Zealand Government representative in England had not made any inquiries to verify the question of the position being really ' available ' when defendant made application for-a passage as, an immigrant. When defendant arrived in the Dominion, to his surprise and, horror he found that the gas-works people at Nelson knew nothing at all about the position. '•' V ' ' '
Stranded with-his wife, without funds and friends, continued counsel, defendant lived as best he could by getting odd jobs. He had a personal-interview with Mr. Ma3sev, and the Government was paying his expenses back to England. A summons for rent had been sent to the Government in an endeavour to secure assistance but no reply had yet been received. Judgment was given for the claim, and an order was made for possession of the premises. "
