THEFT BY YOUNG MAN.
y ~ ri • i RAILWAY REFRESHMENT WARE FINE OF TEN POUNDS IMPOSED. A fine of £10 was imposed on Desmond George Chandler, aged 21, at the Police Court yesterday by Mr. J. W. Paynton, S.M., for the theft of.a butter-dish, and two silver tablespoons, valued at £1 10s, the property of the Railway Department. Senior-Detective Hammond stated that this was a typical trick of gangs of hoodlums slightly under the influence of liquor. Accused, with two other young men, who had subsequently been fined £2 each, was travelling on a train between Pukekohe and Franbton last November. They went into the refreshment rooms at' Mercer and stole various articles from the counter. Some difficulty had been experienced by the police in locating accused and it was not until Monday that he was arrested. Accused was allowed 14 days to pay the money.' * Mr. Poynton said the. restaurants were doing good service ;to the public and would have to be protected from men of this type. ■ . .. .
