JAVA SERVICE CLOSING.

COMMONWEALTH LINERS. HIGH WAGES CAUSE LOSS. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 5.5 P.m.) SYDNEY. April 29. The Commonwealth Line has decided to withdraw from the Java service. The reasons given are that the high wages and the manning scale have made it impossible for the line to continue without heavy loss. The whole of the latter is attributable to the difference between the cost of Australian crews and those of vessels registered outside Australia. The vessels at present engaged in the Java trade will be laid up on the completion of their voyages.
