PREVENTION OF CRUELTY.

APPEAL BY THE SOCIETY. NEED FOR EXTENSION OF WORK. Several matters of interest and importance to all interested in the welfare of women and children and in the prevention of cruelty to animals, will be brought forward at the annual meeting of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, to be held in the Society of Arts Hall, Kitchener Street, this evening. Tho question of the formation of a new society, having as its sole object the welfare of animals, will bo brought forward, also the establishment of a home for stray dogs. The present time is a critical one in the history of the society, and the regrettable fact is noted in the annual report that while Auckland has continued to increase in size and importance during the year, with a corresponding increase in the general prosperity of its citizens* the income of the society shows practically 110 advance upon that of lost year. " The position is, that a society rendering most excellent service to the community in both departments, that of protection, and of prevention, is just marking time so far as financial support is concerned," continues the report, " while tho city which benefits by the society's work is steadily growing more prosperous. Unless there is a change in the public attitude in this respect, the society will not be able to engage an additional inspector for each department, nor make any other needed advance to enable it •to keep pace with needed services. With the constant growth of Auckland, the need for the protection of women and children, and of the prevention of cruelty to animals, is an overincreasing one. Confident] in the importance of its aim, and assured of the usefulness of its work, the society once more appeals to the general public for more liberal financial support."
