COMMERCE AND POLITICS. CHAMBERS' RESOLUTIONS. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, April 27. The Chambers of Commerce Conference adopted resolutions expressing satisfaction with the attitude of the Federal Prime Minister, Mr. S. M. Brace, on Imperial air defence, and expressing the hope that the negotiations for Australian-Canadian preference will reach an early and satisfactory termination. The conference condemned proclaiming too many holidays. In the course of a speech, Sir George Fuller, New South Wales Premier, said the State Government believed in private enterprise. It had disposed of seven out of 11 of its trading concerns, and was prepared to get rid of the other four.

AMERICAN FLEET'S VISIT. MELBOURNE. April 27. No official intimation has yet been received concerning the visit of the American fleet to Australia. The Prime Minister, Mr. S. M. Bruce, staked that Australia would warmly welcome such a visit, which would certainly do much to promote friendly relations between the Empire and the United States. CATTLE DISEASE PRECAUTIONS. MELBOURNE. April 27. The Federal Government has forbidden the importation into Australia of hay, straw and fodder from the United States, owicg to the foot-and-mouth disease there. SCHOOL TEACHERS' CONFERENCE. ADELAIDE, April 27. The inter-State School Teachers' Conference passed a resolution in favour of raising the compulsory school age to 16 years, and the establishment of special schools for the mentally deficient. PASTORALISTS' MEAT COMPANY. SYDNEY, April 27. iPastoralists are considering the formation of a company with a capital of £3,000,000 to develop the meat industry. It is proposed to provide a shipping service of 16-knot, motor-driven, refrigerated vessels. The scheme also includes the erection of works on King's Sound, and a railway to connect the Kimberley districts with Townsville.
