DESERTION FROM A SHIP. TWO SEAMEN SENT TO GAOL. A brief sitting of the Police Court was held yesterday, before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. Two members of the crew of the ShawSavill steamer Maimoa, Charles Eenrj Gabriel, aged 30, and Arthur Edward McKenzie, aged 23, were charged with having been absent from the vessiel with out leave. On behalf of the shipping company, Mr. Bagnall asked that the charge be amended to one of desertion. Mr. Hunt allowed the amendment and both accused pleaded guilty. Sentences of 14 days' imprisonment were inflicted in each case, and an order was made for the men to be placed aboard the Mahana which is due to commence loading at Auckland next week, THEFT OF A MOTOR-CYCLE. The theft of a motor-cycle at Te Aroha, valued at £16, was admitted by Nelson French, aged 18 (Mr. Sullivan). Counsel said that accused had been in a receiving home since he was ten years old. French had been staying at a boarding-house at Te Aroha with the owner of the motorcycle. During the absence of the latter accused sold the machine and came to Auckland. The probation . officer intimated that accused could pay a fine, and accepted responsibility for control of the boy. The magistrate inflicted a fi.as of £5. The bail allowance of H. B. Thomas, who was charged in the Police Court with theft from the New Zealand Shipping Company, was £25, on his own recognisance, and. not £200.
