AUTOMATIC COMPASS.
USE IN MATATUA CASE.
c „ LONDON. April 19- \ silent witness in the shape of the American Merchant's gyroscopic compass, which records automatically the changes in the ship's course, was produced in the Matatua case to controvert the contention of the Matatua's owners that the American ship altered her course before the collision. An expert said that the compass was most reliable, and would oust the' mariner's compass. It made its record with a pen attached to an ink bottle, and would make a blot in the event of a collision.
