NEWMAN'S BILLIARDS WIN. Reuter.—Sun. LONDON. April 20. In the professional billiards championsnip, semi-final, the result was: — T. Newman 16.000 Clark . McConachy . . .. 8.703 Newman to-day made the record championship break of 857, the previous best being his own 850. last year. Newman will now meet Recce in the final. McConachy, interviewed, said that insufficient experience with ivory sets was .the reason why he failed, in hia match aeainnt Newman. He practised some tune with ivory balls, but a man who had trained with composition ball* needed years, not merely months, of practice, before being able to adapt himself. His fitness or form was not'at fault, omkr the ivories beat him. McConachy is going to South Africa, whore he will practise with the ivories and return to Britain in time for the next championship. ' ' , , - . . ~ ' . .. Newman expressed the opinion tnat it was unlikely that ivory balls would be abolished in his life-time. There was enough ivorv to laat ■ for many years. Kirkwood (Australia), by 6 and 4,-in a 36-hole best ball match. Kirkwood's score of 146 represented th«> best card. N.Z. CRIOEETERS BEAT FIJI. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 5.5 p.m.) SUVA', April 20. In the second tcsi match 'between New Zealand and Fiji, New Zealand's first innings closed for 268. Gillespie scored 67, Hiddleaton 50, and Cooper 34. Fiji's first innings had produced 97 rune. In their second they scored 50. New Zealand thug won by an innings and 121 runa.
