COKEWORKERS' STRIKE. SETTLEMENT PROBABLE. A. and N.Z. SYDNEY. April 21
The prospects of a settlement of the coke strike are good. The executive of the Miners' Federation, is now prepared to recommend the resumption of work at all cokeworks as soon as a satisfactory arrangement can be made. It is stated that agreement meetings will be held tomorrow with a view to resumption of work on Wednesday. FATAL RAILWAY SPEEDING. BRISBANE. April 21. At the inquiry into the deaths of Mesdames Atkin and Malleitt, who lost their lives in a railway accident at Gillen's Siding on February , 18, the coroner i found that the deaths wera due to the excessive speed at which the train was driven just prior to the accident. This was due to negligence and disregard of I railway departmental rules. FIRE AT TOWNSVILLE. BRISBANE. April 21. Damage estimated at £15,000 was done by a fire which gutted Thomas Brown's wholesale store and offices in Townsville. TAHITI'S WIRELESS TESTS. MELBOURNE. April 21. Mr. MacLuircan, who has been carrying out' wireless tests aboard the Tahiti, states that it will be a month befoie the results can definitely be announced. Enough is known, however, to enable him to say that the test* have been hi a wonderfully successful nature. RESIGNATION OF A GOVERNOR. PERTH. April 21. The Governor of Western Australia, Sir Francis A. Newdegate, has resigned in order to attend to his private affairs in England, from which he has been absent for seven years. Sir Francis has teen Governor of the State since 1920.
