BANDS IN COMPETITION.
CONTEST AT OTAKUHU.
HONOURS TO PONSONBY BOYS
A suburban band contest, having for its object the raising of funds for tkv purchase of new instruments and uni> forma for the Otahuhu Band, was held at Otahuhu on Saturday afternoon andevening. The' contest, which was held under the auspices of the North island. Brass Bands'/Association, attracted six bands, the members of which were welcomed by the Mayor of Otahuhu, Mi-. R. B. Todd. The quickstep competition was held in th» afternoon, musical and military points bW awarded as follows :-Papatoewe, music 62, military 149 total 211: Otahuhu, 65, 139-2&2 n Ponsonby, Bow Band 65 134—199; PapaJkuro, 60, 122— 3?; Birkenhead, 60, 121—181; Pukev cc 11G I*z4 * *'■ kC the evening "the hymn test was played, the piece selected being Lead, Lndly Light* (Sandon) and the following points were awarded :—Papatoetoe, Sfpointe; Pa?**"*. 59: Ponsonby, 68; Oiahuhu and Birkenhead, 67 points each; Pukekohe 54. ' The gold medals for the highest i aggregate musical pointe gained on the two gats were wo/by the Ponsonby Boy. Band, the silver medals going to the Papatoetoe Band. The results were :- I'ensonby, 123 points; PapatoetoeW, Otahuhu, 120; Papakura, 119; Birkenhead, 117 Pukekohe, 109. . . The modal for the band winning tne quickstep was presented to Major W. U. 6ibb, drum-major of the Papatootoe The musical judge was Wont/J. Lighten, bandmaster of the , Auckland Infantry Band, and the militarr judge*. Si H. Hatt and. Sergt,-Major H. Patience. Mr. J. Williamson acted as supervisor.
