NOT BOUND BY AWARD.
EASTER SATURDAY HOLIDAY. ANOMALY IN GISBORNE. fjiX TKXBQBAFH.— COB&BSPONDENT.I .-> > m i'*->- : GISBORNE. Monday. " A remarkable position was disclosed today regarding; Easter Saturday holiday.
At a meeting of retailers the chairman explained that " under the new award Saturday was a holiday, but Gisborne was not generally bound by the award. Under the decision of the Court, however, the holidays set but in the award became statutory holidays. The position was, therefore, that the' shops had a to close on Saturday unless an agreement was reached with the employees' union to substitute another' day. There was no union of the employees is Gisborne, but they could negotiate with the Auckland .union- The meeting could assume, therefore, .that, they had to close on Saturday unless they, were prepared to substitute another holiday. .
One speaker said that no action should be taken. ' No day could be substituted unless the consent of the Auckland union was obtained, and he did not think that the Auckland secretary would take the responsibility of accepting 1 any ; alteration without consulting those affected. Another speaker said that'if they did telegraph"' to Auckland they probably would not get a reply until after the holidays were over. , It was decided that this year Easter Saturday be observed as a holiday.
