W. j Popper in the Senate calling for a conI fe*ence on arms reductions, international j law and The Hague Tribunal, precipitated I a brief but acrimonious debate, showing j that many Senators deeply resent the ! attempt to side-track the late President , Harding's World Court proposal or to ! disregard the League of Nations. j Mr. C. A. Swanson asked Mr. Pepper I why the United States should not join , the conference now being held between i 54 nations, namely, the League of | Nations, upon the foregoing subjects. j Mr. Pepper replied that he refused to j discuss the League of Nations. ; Other Democrats arose and demanded !to know what action was being taken ! pending the discussion of the resolutions ; asking for a World Conference. Some of ! the Democrats Esked for information as |to whether the Republican leaders were ! committed to Mi. Topper's resolution. i Mr. Pepper replied in the negative. He explained his proposal, declaring that he . was convinced that an invitation issued by the King of Belgium and the Presil dent of the United States, Mr. Calvin ; Coolidge, to such a conference as he pro- | posed to bo held in Brussels, would be i well received.
