MOTOR BREAKING RECORDS.

PROTEST FROM CLERGYMAN. DANGER TO TEE PUBLIC. Protest against the dangerous speeds attained by motorists in endeavouring to break the record between Auckland and Wellington was voiced at a meeting of the Clifton County Council at Waitara last week. Attention to the matter was drawn in a letter received from, the Rev. G. H. Gavin, of the Church of England. One of the record-breaking motor-cars, ho stated, had passed the Motonui school on the main road between Urenui and Waitara at a terrific rate. Taking into consideration the difficult grades and turns on the road in many cases, the cars were a menace to all lawful traffic, and to children attending the schools bordering on the main highway. It was suggested that the help of the member for the district, Mr. J. C. Rolleston, be solicited, and that tho council ask the Government to prohibit speeding on the highways. The council agreed that the practice was most dangerous to the travelling public, and it was decided to bring thematter under the notice of the Government. The member for tho district will also be asked to do all in his power in the House to enable the county to prevent this evil. It was further decided to communicate with the Counties' Association on the matter.
