KINDERGARTEN WORK.

| NEED FOR ITS EXPANSION. ENLISTING PUBLIC SUPPORT CAPABILITIES OF THE STAFF The annual meeting of tho Auckland Kindergarten Association, was held yesterday, Mr. A. S. C. Brown presiding. Details of a year of activity were contained in the reports of the various kindergartens. The report of the honorary secretary, Mr. G. Q'Halloran, stated that the spread of the business area of the city had led -to a, great falling off in the number of children attending tho St. James' free kindergarten, as a result of which the ladies responsible for that branch of the work had transferred their activities to Homo Street, Grey Lynn, a more congested residential area. At present the kindergarten was being carried on in tem- [ I»orary premises, but -with very gratifying results as regarded the number, of chilI dren. A suitable site for a new school , had been purchased, and the new building, which had been subsidised by the Government, was well under way. During the year, eight students had obtained tho association's diploma, ono with distinction.

Expenditure during the year totalled , £1814, including £350 for the purchase of ! a new site at Grey Lynn. Donations and i subscriptions amounted to £222, Governj ment subsidies to £480. A donation of ! £100 from the Dilworth Trust had been ! divided equally between each of the four ! fri»e kindergartens. | In moving tho adoption of the report, ! the chairman said it was gratifying to : note that one of the committees had been | enterprising enough to secure land and ! proceed with the erection of a new kinj dergarten. ! -Mr. 11. G. Cousins, who seconded tho j adoption of the report, said that where I there was need for four or five kinder- | gax'tens when the Myers Kindergarten was crocked, there was now need for twice : that number, yet not one new building I had been erected. The association ha a j a line staff of assistants, which couid j readily copo with five times the amount |of work. It would be well for the incom- ; ing council to consider furiously tho need , for enlisting outside sympathy in kinderI garten activities, and finding other helpers who would carry on in other parti of the city the. excellent work the ladies' I committees wero now. performing in their j own areas. Mrs. P. Oliphanfc expressed tho opinion ! that if there was a move toward estab- * lishing kindergartens in other districts, | additional helpers could readily be ob- | tamed. ' Miss Gibson, kindergarten trainer, said i a report had already been drawn up setI ting out tho localities where new knideri gartens were needed. j On tho motion of Mr. Cousins, it. was j decided that the incoming committee \ should take into consideration the jeed ; for extension of the work. The following officers were elected :— ! Patroness, Her Excellency, Lady Jellicoe; ! president, Mr. C. J. Ellerbeck"; vice-pre-sidents, Mrs. P. Oliphant, Mr. H. T. Merritt; council, Mesdaroes A. S. Bankart, Alfred Kjdd, J. B. Macfarlane, I£. H. B. Milsora, S. Nathan, G. O'Halloran, N. Ramsay, C. Trevithick (representing the four free kindergartens), S. A.
