FIREMAN MALTREATED.
ASSAULTS A COMRADE. FRIENDS SEEK REVENGE. KICKED UNTIL INSENSIBLE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WANGANUI. Monday. A man named Garlick, a fireman on the steamer Gale, went aboard the ship to-night and with a bottle struck another fireman, named McLean, the side of whose face was badly cut. Garlick then . went ashore and disappeared. Later on the man was seen near the wharf and was pursued by tome firemen and sailors, who ran him down in the Avenue. He was seized and thrown to the footpath, where he was savagely kicked into insensibility. The unfortunate man was then dragged to a dark spot near the wharf and again viciously kicked until constables arrived. The injured man was sent to the hospital. He was badly hurt but no vital injury was done. McLean's wounds were treated and he sailed with th« steamer at midnight.
