DEVOTION TO DUTY.
WAIKINO SHOOTING &ASE. HEADMASTER'S HEROISM. RECOGNITION BY CABINET. [BY TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT. J WELLINGTON. Monday. The case of Mr. R. Reid, headmaster of the Waikino school, who was severely wounded on the occasion of the shooting tragedy at the school in October last, and who has not been able to resume duty, has been brought before the Cabinet by the Minister for Education, the Hon. C. J. Parr. It has been decided that as Mr. Reid's full recovery from his wounds is not yet assured, he will in the meantime be paid his full salary of £445 a year. All medical and hospital expenses, the cost of nursing and massage and expenses incurred in travelling for treatment will be paid by the Education Department. Should Mr. Reid be retired on superannuation as medically unfit, the Minister has been authorised to place before Parliament a proposal for a special permanent pension in addition to his superannuation allowance. If this proposal is assented to by Parliament, it will mean that Mr. Reid will continue in receipt of his present salary. The Government hopes that these provisions may be deemed a definite recognition of Mr. Reid's bravery and splendid devotion to duty under the most trying circumstances.
