OCEAN-FLYING AEROPLANE. • ? ..vw. r v/, . V' .V o',.'- • •AN (AMBITIOUS PROJECT. Preparations are in hand for; the most' spectacular aeroplane flight in the 'history of aeronautics, says a London'pa,per. It will be made by a machine which experts already refer to as "the aeroplane of the future." - • " \ From Paris, across the Atlantic Ocea.n to New York, in one tremendous, nonstop; t\«o-miles-a-minute rush! .Such is the ; daring scheme. ■ All that is . most advanced in , science and technique is beiiig concentrated' upon it.* " \, r . vj.'i ■*"; The project aims to be a world-wide advertisement of the immense strides made recently by ; French ' air power. This famous : firm of De Monge are being: en- ■ trusted with the ; construction of the 120-miles-an-hour ocean-flying , 'plane, ■' and : a picked crew is to be recruited from among the finest. pilots and mechanics in -France.
The engines of the machine are to be placed within : the single wing, Which forms' both body 'and lifting surface. This wing, tapering 'finely toward its . ex-; tremities. •: will; have a hollow • centre-sec-tion, measuring, from top to bottom, as much as seven feet at its deepest point. J.?. Here will be the chief pilot, ] his assintants, and also; the tanks - containing; the supplies of fuel. ; After ascending from an aerodrome'. Dn the outskirts of Paris, and heading oceanward, the machine will draw its wheels up inside its -wing, and steer for 'New York—some ; 4000 miles distant— " its maximum speed. ;• . «^ i , The pilot : will occupy a seat just inside the. front of the wing at its centre point, 1 gazing : through outlook windows Which which will be let into the wing-suriFace. Owing to the power of sustained speed possessed by this huge, stream-lined "flying wing," it is believed that the entire non-stop journey, from Paris direct to N.'.w York,' will be accomplished in less than 36 hours. ; t ':'
