DEFENCE NOTES.

BY RAMROD. The anjnual dinner of the Northern Depot Corps of Signals was held in the Melteith Dining Rooms on Saturday evening. Among those present were:, Majors W. C. . Finnis, officer commanding No. 1 Regimental District, W. T. Dow and V. .Dunne, lieutenant - t Meikle, N.Z.S.C., adjutant to the Corps of' Signals* and Mr. H. Keary; late superintendent of telegraphs. During' the evening selection were rendered by ait orchestra composed of six members of the -corps,. Several members of the company contributed songs, and Lieutenant Kinnealy sang "Lorraine," Sergeant Kellaway "Until," and Mr. S. Pritchard " The Pilgrimage." The toast list included "The Navy and -Army," Major A- T. . Dow,; in reply Major W, : C. Finnis: "The New Zealand Corps of Signals, Major V. Dunne, in reply. Lieutenant G, H. • Scull, O.C. Northern Depot Corps of Signals. . The prizes for the inter-section and rifle competitions were . presented -by Major Finnis, as follows:—Kohn Cup, most efficient section 5 daring year, lieutenant Robertshaw ' 200 yds. \ ni< match, Sergeant Orme; 300 yds, Q.M.S. Brack; 300 yds., • Sergeant Orme; highest'; aggreBate8 ate score in three matches,' Sergeant Orme; corps championship belt'and gold medal. Lieutenant. G. H. Scull; runnerup, Signaller Hammond; third, Signaller Bleakley. Major Finnis congratulated Lieutenant Scull on winning 1 the' - championship belt, and said ;it was 5 indeed gratifying to see a commanding officer tike such a keen interest in keeping his shooting up to & high standard.H A framed, photograph of the officers, N.C.O.'s, and signallers was presented to lieutenant Scull from the corps, as a tribute to their genial and efficient commander - The 368 Takapuna Company has made good progress during the year. The postings have' been heavy, and the company is now about 90 strong. A general parade will be held to-morrow evening -at 7.30 o'clock. .. The 3rd Auckland Mounted-Rifles B and C Squadrons commenced their, annual training camp "at Glevedon an Saturday. Captain Dittmer M.C., is : camp commandant. Provided the weather is reasonably fine, -the training should be : extremely interesting, and the actual mounted work that will he done should prove useful and instructive. • •_ ~ ' j i D Squadron, 4th Mounted Rifles, willcommence a week's training at Cambridge ] on Friday. About 60 yen will attend. \ The dependability of the New Zealand ammunition was well demonstrated at the! N.R.A. meeting at Trenthiun recently. Over 6?,000 rounds, were fired, under all weather conditions, " and -in varying lights, and there was not a single complaint as to a defective cartridge.. This is probably a reoord for New Zealand. The ranges were from SOOpds. pp to 1000 yds., and at all ranges the work, done by the ammunition was first-class. • i'.. U ; - The Southern Command rifle meeting will take place at the Redcliffs range on April 19 and 21. Some of the special challenge trophies are the Southern. Command Champion Bel Clifford! Cop, the Sir Heaton Rhodes Cup, .the Leslie Hills Shield, and the Loughrey Cup. All other trophies are won outright. It. The shoot that was to be held on. Saturday by the 13th Battery had to be postponed, owing to the' poor visibility due to the heavy rain and mist on the .harbour. The 3rd . Battery, N.Z.A. (Major C. N.
