EMPLOYERS'* GOODS PAWNED. TRAVELLING SALESMAN'S THEFT. "This man has a weakness for pawning things belonging to other people," said Chief-Detective Cummings when William Kirkwood „w*s charged at the Police Court on Saturday, before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., with having stolen a cample case and contents valued at 255., the property of his employers. It was stated that accused had been travelling as a salesman, and pawned the sample case, together with a watch which was His own property. A sentence of sue months' imprisonment had • been imposed upon Kirkwood in 1922 for theft. Ho had since been warned upon several occasions not to raise money upon his employers' property. . Accused was ordered to come up for sentence in 12 months.
GIVEN ANOTHER CHANCE. James Clark, aged 38, made his third appearance for drunkenness and admitted having committed a breach of his probation order. Accused was given a bad character by the probation officer. . The Magistrate: A yeac on Roto Roa Island might cure him. Accused: Just give me this here ch'Atst and I won't drink no more. Clark was given the chance and escaped •with a fine of £5 for the breach of probation and 30s for drunkenness. / CHARGES AGAINST SEAMEN. Two members of the crew of the steamer Valdura, Charles Shears and James Sidney Bishop, were remanded until next Saturday upon charges of having been absent from then; ship without leave. A clerk in the employ of the shipping company stated that seven men were missing when the ship was ready for sea, Shears unsuccessfully prosecuted the third officer of "the .Vaidura last week for alleged assault.
