MOTOR SPIRIT PRICES.
ADVANCE OF 1s 6d A CASE. OPERATION FROM TO-DAY. FURTHER INCREASE' PREDICTED. The prices of all brands of benzoline, motor spirits and benzine are advanced Is 6d per case in Auckland from to-day. The wholesale prices to date were: Benzoline, 22s per case; motor spirit, 19s for highest grade and from 17s to 18s for lower grade, less the usual discounts. It is stated by people interested in the local motor spirit trade that the present increase is only the forerunner of further advances. Recent cablegrams from America indicate that the United States Government- intends imposing an export tax on all grades of petroleum spirit. It is also stated that there have been two or three substantial rises in the cost of petroleum spirits in California during the last two months, and it was expected that the advance in the price in Auckland would have come sooner. Owing to an abnormally high production in America last autumn the price of the spirit ■ was lowered. The present increase is in the nature of a recovery from that drop, and the further increases predicted will follow the imposition of an export tax.
