TAXATION COMMISSION.
EXCLUSION OF LABOUR. MR. HOLLAND'S PROTEST. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRES9 ASSOCIATION.] WESTPORT, Saturday. In further correspondence with the Prime Minister regarding representation oil the Taxation Commission, Mr. Holland, Leader of the Opposition, said he fails to see how the commission would be overloaded if it consisted of,, say, two business men and two from workers' organisations. The Prime Minister replied that the selections had been made irrespective of party, sectional, or local considerations, but simply because they were thoroughly reliable and experienced business men, with good knowledge of economics, who would be able to arrive at a decision valuable both to Parliament and the country. Inferring that the ' proposal to appoint business men only to the commission will not be reconsidered, Mr. Holland says: "Without in any way reflecting on the capabilities and integrity of the gentlemen it is proposed to appoint, I am confident that the fact of the commissioners being drawn solely from the ranks of employers, and the consequent narrowing down of the commission to that school of economic thought, will render the report far less valuable than would otherwise be the case."
PROTEST FROM COUNTRY.
EQUAL FACILITIES URGED. • [BY TKLBCEAPH. —PBJSSS ASSOCIATION.] PAIiMEESTOW NORTH. Saturday. On behalf of the Dairy Farmers' Union, Mr. P. J- Small, provincial president, wired the Premier: "I consider it unfair to producers that the Taxation Commission should consist of business men only, and strongly urge equal representation, as the question is of equal, if not greater importance, to farmers. I also consider it unfair to take evidence in four centres only such procedure certainly favouring business and city men Strongly urge equal facilities should be _ given by including main inland towns in the commission's itinerary."
