OFFENDERS PROSECUTED. ONE LOSES CIVIL EIGHTS. Substantial penalties for failing to attend drill as required' by the Defence Act were imposed on several offenders who /wore prosecuted in the Police Court yesterday before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., and Messrs. E. Leydon and W. J. Potter, J.P's. One defendant who had failed to attend territorial parades was deprived of civil rights for 10 years and another was warned that the next time he appeared a similar penalty would be imposed. Harlan William Joseph Patchett, who had been previously fined for non-attend-ance, was ordered to be deprived of civil rights for 10 years. Frederick Henry Winzenberg, who had been twice previously fined and had atso been deprived of civil right for 10 years, was fined £5, in default 14 days' imprisonment. A similar penalty was imposed on John Dickson, who was stated to have had three years' holiday from drill; and on Ralph Heywood, who was warned that next time he would be deprived of civil rights. ! Stanley W. Brunton was fined £2 and 9s costs, in default seven days' imprisonment: William Cash, £1 17s 6d; and J. W. Newman, £1 iOs. . For failing to register for service as required by the Act Alfred William Mackrell was fined £5, being allowed two months in which to pay.
