MAIN ARTERIAL ROAD.

AUCKLAND'S STTOTH OUTLET. SUGGESTED EASTERN ROUTE. [BY - TELEGRAM.—OWN COiRHESPONDENT. J ~ •TE AROHA,, Wednesday. At a meeting, of, , the Piako County Council a letter was received from Mr. J. F. Goodwin,, of Maramarua, with reference to the proposal to build the main arterial road alongside the Main Trunk railway line, which is well on the western- side of the island- In- the . near future, he said, when the Pacroa-Pofceno railway will be laid there will he four main "centres in South Auckland, viz.-, Pokeno, Paeroa, Morrinsville and Hamilton'; also daring the next 20 years the bulk of the population will be on the eastern side of the line. "X would respectfully suggest "that you organise the eastern counties," Mr. Goodwin continued," and demand that the main road be built about 10, miles east of the Main Trunk line. Such a route, it was urged would- make it possible' for secondary roads to , branch off from Mauflgataw&iri to the Miranda, from the- old Surrey farm to Waitakaruru, from Mataharu to •Kaihere, and from Mangawhara to Morrinsville.- It would also cut the Thames-Waikato • road at - Newstead "and Matangi, and the Rotorua-Hamilton road at Hautapu. •; / - • . " I think that the ratepayers along this route would not object to be rated for a fair portion of the cost," said Mr. Goodwin. " The route would also shorten the distance ... between ' - Auckland and th'p, eastern counties from 10 to 25 miles. I am quite safe in saying that half of the land passed through is Crown lands, cattle lands, soldier settlements, and other tenures. There is also a lot of Government money advanced by the State Advances' Department for this area It was agreed to inform Mr. Goodwin that.the council had confidence in the Highways Board, and were satisfied that the roads , could bo put in the right place.
