The Imperial household has issued a statement to the effect that the mental -•onion of the Emperor Yoshito has fiioivn no improvement in the last 18 months, and that his failure to improve applies particularly to his articulation and memory, which have become worse. The Emperor's physical condition otherwise ("otinues favourable, and is improving. The statement is designed to appease public anxiety concerning the monarch s well-being. The Emperor continues in residence at Numazu, near Yokonama, ,in ktlus'oii, his quarters being detached from the Imperial Palace.
