THE ART EXHIBITION. \RY. TELEGRAPH. —OWN. COT! RESPONDENT.} " WHANGAREI, Tuesday. An art exhibition was opened to-day in the County. Council Chambers, under the auspices of the Art. and Literary Society, by the Mayor, Mr. D. McLean. The collection as a whole compares favourably with previous years. There are some very fine oil end water colour paintings from the South, as well as from local artists. The young students', section is a feature. The exhibits 'include displays from the Wellington Art . Club, Wanganui Society of Arts, Remucra Sketch Club, arid several Auckland and Dunedin artists. ' The Mayor congratulated the society on the exhibition, which, he said, was getting better every veer, arid was gradually winning the support of the public. 'Later on it would grow in dimensions. He thanked the society on behalf of the. borough for .a fine painting donated, which would form the nucleus of an art gallery. A social and. fiance held under the ausnices of the Hibernian Society lest night in the Town Hall proved a brilliant success, the funds raised being in aid of the Catholic school.
