THEFT BY A VERGER.
OFFERTORY BuXES RIFLED. The theft of £8 from the offertory boxes at St. 'Matthew's Church, Bayswater, Loudon, was alleged at the Marylebone Police Court against John Edward Mercer, aged 31, the verger of the church. He pleaded guilty. Before going to St Matthew's he was employed as a verger nt St. Giles, Oxford. Detective Bowles said that the prisoner with his wife had been employed at the church •'for about ten months. Money had been missed from the offertory boxes for, some time, with the result that a trap was set by the church officials, and the accused was caught. He then confessed that he had stolen about £8. In February, 1915, he was bound over /at Hants Assises on charges of stealing a cheque and forgery. ' Mr. Cancellor said that accused had been robbing the offertory boxes in f \ tacred building for months, while no doubt posing as a religious ' man. He sentenced him to three months' imprisonment.
