YOUNG GIRL'S SAD LAPSE. FOUND DRUNK IN STREET. h A 19-year-old girl, for whom Mr. i Woodley . appeared, cams before Mr. | J. W. Poynton, S.M., in tho Police Court I yesterday on charges of drunkenness, j mischief, and of being an idle and dis- j orderly person. It, was stated 'that accused was found lyinjjj drunk in Albert Street on February 4. At the ..police station she had damaged a padded cell to the extent of £3 15ai. Inquiries made' by Detective-Sergeant .[ssell had . elicited the information' that she had been discharged from a home in th© south, and on account of her conduct the home was unwilling 'to take her back. She frequented vessels in port and drank , to excess * ' ~ -V« Counsel emphasised accused's youth. He stated that she was not under proper control at home; she had fallen into bad company, but there was still a chance for Tier to reform. The girl was committed to Point Halswell for 12 months. The snin of £3 15s was- ordered to be paid to the Crown. ' FINE INSTEAD' OF GAOL. A reduction of penalty was sought by Mr. • Flemming in the case of Ernest Hamilton McGuire, aged 38, who was sentenced on Monday to seven days imprisonment for being drunk while in charge of a motor-car. The magistrate .remitted the term of imprisonment and imposed a fine, of £10,, with costs, 10s. ALLEGATION OF THEFT. A remand until Monday was granted in the case of Robert James Brydon, alias Woodward, aged 36, who appeared on four charges of theft Midi one of obtaining 2s by false pretences. „ * ,•
