' The cricket match between the New South Wales and Wellington teams was commenced on the Basin Reserve to-day. Macartney (New, South Wales) _ won the toss, and he readily availed himself of having the first knock on a perfect wicket. An ovation greeted the famous lefthanded batter, Bardsley, who opened with Andrew*. Brice, bowling from the southern end, contented himself with only one fieldsman behind square leg, although Andrews, the more aggressive of the two batsmen, glanced him to the boundary there several times. _ Once he nearly yorked Bardsley from the southern end. McGirr pegged away at Andrews* leg stump, eventually getting it With a swinger. Bardsley treated the spectators to noma magnificent leg-glancing - and hooking. Towards the hundred, Macartney and Bardsley amused th« crowd by running for almost every stroke, although the ball was travelling smartly to a. fieldsman close in. It made the. fielding look very cheap. From Hiddleston « second ball Macartney put one up dangerously near to Brice at point, but he left the next off the same type of ball severely alone.
