NOTES FROM ELLERSLIE.

GOSSIP OF THE TRACKS. * ' BY ARCHER. ••'; Ares, who won et double at the Egmont summer meeting, is a four-yeax-old gelding by Martian from Paphia, hence « half-brother to the speedy Panhian. Ares won several races and notched four minor placing* in IX starts &9 avtwo-yeaiHold, but a» a thr«e-y«ar-old ewes distinctly disappointing,.racing ii times without gaming, a. place. J v He di« not do much better, in his early , engagements this season, but succeeded at his sixth start in dead-heat me with Civility in the Telesiraph Handicap at Marion. It is usual ' with Martian's stock to make big improvement when they do begin to show form, and Ares may prove not exception. Auoklandere were of opinion " that Loyal Irish would run a good race tin the Egmont Cup, but were more impressed with his prospects in the Tonka Stakes, as he is undoubtedly a better horse at a mile and a-quarter than over the Cup distance. And so it proved to be, • for, after running a solid race in the former event, he came out oh the second day and took the Tonka Stakes, for which he started a firm favourite. in good style.. Maria of Hereford was well' fancied for the Juvenile Handicap at Hawera. which, she shunted for in. apparently very tjunug style and Paid a, nice dividend. . Saw wae again considered to have en excellent chance in the, .Electric Handicap on the second day. but missed a place. However, now that she has succeeded in winning a stake, she may be expected to score again soon, as a good Weal ef improvement can be looked for from her. Though. Lapidary did not win by « very big margin in the waipapa Handicap at Hawera, he scored in impressive fashion, coming along at. the finish with a fine burst of speed and winning decisively. Lapidary did not start on the second day. He has scored two wins and a second in his last three starts, and. as he is coming on with his racing, has further successes ahead of him./ That consistent filly. Lady Bentinck, was a firm favoUrite for the Juvenile Handicap at Hawera, but after putting up a game fight went under by * small margin to the imported filly, Maria of Hereford. _Lsdy Bentinok is a two-year-old brown filly by Absurd out of Bonny 'Portland, and in eight ' . atarta h*» W< W three times, been second twice, third twice, and once, unplaced. T. Morriss is usually well represented in the hurdle events at the country meetings, and has Bright Liaht and Landmrd 'engaged in the Hack Hurdle Race at Te Kuiti to-day The former won over hurdles at Tauniarunui in December, but euhseqentljr raoed. poorly <at Te Awomutu, while , Paudbird ran sufficiently well at Takapuna to suggest that an early victory for him was not improbable. Whetunui missed a place in both of her races at Takapuna. but she is favourably placed to retrieve herself in the Maiden Handicap at Te Kuiti to-day. wherein she will be meeting a weak class of hacks. If she runs true to the effort she made in the Ferguson Handicap at E-llerslie, she should occupy a prominent position * at the finish. Wbetunui is also dngaged in two other hack events. Te Kuri has been showing very consistent form, having finished second in three of his laet having finished second victory his ast four starts, and an early victory f°' r him would be well. merited. He has a double engagement at Te Kuiti to-day, and should perform well, for he has-thriven on his recent racing, and at the present time ia a very fit horse. When Master Rohan ran in the Waitamata Handicap at Ellerslie^ — by the way, was his last outing in publiche was sent out favourite, but failed to reach a i place. He had run. several fair races previous to that. and. despite his failure, will i probably meet with good support in the Te Kumi Welter at Te Kuiti to-day. Penelophon. who carried off a double at the Wellington summer meeting, is engaged in the Great Northern Oaks, which is to be decided at tho autumn meeting at Ellerslie. and, if all poes well with her, it is expected that she will contest the event. ' Hoy. the dam of Penelophon, was successful in the Great Norther.i Oaks in 1915. Mr. W. SchollumSa well-performed pair. Ruapapa and Royal Blood, tire engaged at the Taranaki meeting next week, but it is not known yet whether thjjy, are to compete. Ruapapa is nicely weighted in the Taranaki, Cup and I will not be surprised if he makes the trip. He would be greatly fancied by Aucklanders should he run. When Thunderclap contested, the Ferry Handicap and the Rangitoto Handicap at Takapuna last month he was solidly sup t ported 01* both occasions, and, though he ran two fair races, missed a place m both. He did not find much backing in the Nolan Cup at Hawera. and returned his supporters a very remunerative dividend. 'Tinohoro was responsible' for nearly all the pace in the Takapuna Jockey Club Handicap, in which he led into the straight and eventually finished seventh. He may have done better only for running wide a* the turn, and if the reproduces that effort he should render a good account of himself in the Te Kuiti Cup to-day. There was good support for Pompey, who startled second favourite, in the Whareroa Welter on the opening day at Hawera. biit he missed a place. Ho was again unplaced in the Tonka Stakes op the second flay, and has been a big, disappointment since winning the Avondale Guineas. Rehutai. who scored in the Maiden Hack Scurry at Hawera, is a three-year-old grey mare by Luoullus from Aoustis, and is trained by J. Fryer.. She had .only raced twice previously, being, unplaced on both ocoasibno. but was weal backed for this event. Rehutai was ridden by E. Keeaing, Anxious Momenta, who accounted for the Jumpers' Flat Handicap' at Gisborne, i« evidently a very useful sort, having notched two wins and a. second in his last three starts. He is a six-year-old gelding by Merry Moment from , Lyric-ire. and should win mora money during the S* ft aon. • Penona was sent to New Plymouth in charge of J. Young, but her trainer, J. Amderton, will leave for New' Plymouth on Monday to superintend her final work for her Taranaki «ngag«men*s. The Penury i mare is very well and will be ridden by I G. F. Young. ~.,.'.

Those who took notice- of Bustler's showings at Takapuna fully anticipated his success in the Oh awe Hurdle Race at Hawera, amd also expected him to do well in the Okaiawa Hurdle Race on the oeoqnd day. He settled his chance in the latter event by falling. _ ; E. Pope intended taking Gold Plane, and Soulterina to Rotorua. but the latter, it is understood, will not make the trip, and Gold Plane will be his only representative. Soulterina is engaged at the Taranaki Jubilee Meeting next week, put whether she will race there I am unable to aay.

The forward running of Sir, Burnett is the Takapuna Jockey Club Handicap has caused his Te KuitjrCuP: chance to be held in high esteem. The Qum Abbey gelding will ■ha ■ ridden by, A- Tinker,, who. .has. been associated with him in nearly all his en» gagements this season. ,"'... Among- the horae? engaged in, theJUfaiden Handirap at To B.uiti to-day are Wftirmto and Muftini, who finished third and fourth respectively in the Waina Maiden Plate at T« Awamutu in December-. If they have made any improvement since then, they should run well. The two-year-old Hoarirl, who has , been troubled with Borenasn ,for some time, has been Indulging.in a short let-uP and ha ß freshened up" nicely. The Biaprne ,oolt is quartered at Elierahe, but HJ,Rfunaa ether horses, Tako Take »nd Active, are still located at Deronport. Matters have been comparatively quiet at Elleralie since the Takapuna, meeting, and will probably remain so for a week or two. Several trainers are attending the meetings In Taranaki with small teams, while others will be engaged at» the country meetings. F. D. Jones, the successful Riuearton trainer will bo represented at the Tttranaki Jubilee Meeting by Glentruin.. Economist, and Zaracoza Glentium, who is the main : sjay of the team, will contest the Taraliaki Stakes. The Wanganui Jockey Club has.received ah excellent list of nominations for its fortheominflr meeting, and the h«t mcludee aeverai AuckTaind horses, viz., Muskotoon. Jolly Princess, »and Penona. _, Merry Ann. Jolly Princess, and Penona were shipped to New Plymouth on Thursday with a view to fulfilling -JUiM«t| at. the Taranaki Jockey Club's Jubilee Me sting next week « " Marble Slab is being schooled over hurdles and will probably have his attention turned to hurdle-racing later in the season He shaped well in A schooling bout at Jslleralie on Thursday morning.' Income, who had the «eryicea of tho Auckland horseman. A. J. McFlynn,' waa made favourite for the Egmont Cup. but the Guiatiforte gelding . failed to run prominently.

H. Gray had a good innings on the first day of the Egmont summer meeting, when he rode three winners- His successful mounts were Muroahi. Crossfire, and Lapidary. , General Pryde was taken to To Rwti on Thursday, with a m view to Mailing his engaßement in the Te Kumi Haok Welter, He will be ridden by H. Goldfinch. Bustler carried 811b. overweight when he won the Ohawe Hurdle Race at Hawera. > Ha waa ridden by S. Walls, who ha« been riding in fine form of late, Peter Amnps and Silverton h,*™ been on the easy list since the Takapuna meeting, as also have Canowindra and Oaklauds. H. Wiggins will be .riding at Rotorua, where hin- mounts will include Royal Fame and King Multifid. J, C Coleman will be represented at Bptorua bv Royal Fame and King Multifid, and i» leaving with - his charges on Monday. M Barrow will ride Finlay In the Hack Hurdle Race at Tc Kuiti to-day.
