RAILWAY RETIREMENTS.

Mitchell, traffic manager of railways, at Christchurch, the Minister for Railways, the 'Hon. J. G. Coates, stated to-day that Mr. Mitchell was not on the list of officers to be retired. Mr. Mitchell had sent in his resignation to take effect' from March 31, but it had not- . been accepted. " More than that I cannot say," added the Minister. : ~ Speaking on the general question of the retirement of officers after forty years' service Mr. Coates stated that this policy would be adhered to, with the provision that he, as Minister, reserved the right to retain such men as he felt were necessary to the department on acount of experience and knowledge. The appointments of men to "fill the positions vacated had been made without reference to seniority. ~ : ,/;.
