WELLINGTON TAXI-DRIVERS

DECREASE IN BUSINESS. [BY TELEGRAPH.OWN' CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, Tuesday. So far as Wellington is concerned the taxi-drivers are not having a very enviable time and there has been a fairly considerable decrease in their numbers. Nevertheless it seems •to be a fact that there are yet too many catering for the demands of the city. In 1921 the number of taxis in the city reached a total of about 180, but between twenty and thirty hare given up trying to make a living by the occupation since that time. A few new owners have taken their places on the stands. The Christmas and New Year periods this year were decidedly poor ones. A driver stated this morning that he took £2 15s> on Christmas Day as against £8 10s for the previous Christmas Day. He was of opinion that the taxi-owners would have to do the work cheaper with .cheaper cars.
