GOVERNMENT'S DECISION.

SUBJECT TO SETTLEMENT.

[BY TELEGRAPH. OWN' CO-RESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON. Monday. The announcement that the coal dispute on the West Coast had been settled was followed by a consideration of the question of the prosecutions directed by the Government to be taken against the men and the employers. The cases were set down for hearing next week. Mr. Balderstone, secretary of the West Coast Miners' District Council, to-day telegraphed to the Minister for Labour asking that the prosecutions .should be abandoned, as a complete settlement had been arrived at. It is learned that the Minister subsequently consulted the representatives of the coalmine owners to ascertain whether the latter desired that the prosecutions against them should be abandoned, but did not receive a favourable reply. It is understood 'that it was decided this afternoon by the Government to abandon the prosecutions, provided that the settlement is complete. The Minister for Mines, the Hon. G. J.
