£50 FINE IN OPIUM CASE.
GREEK BEFORE THE COURT. IGNORANCE PLEA FAILS. [by TELEGRAPH. —PRESS association.] PALMERSTON NORTH,. Saturday. At the Magistrate's Court to-day Anadtasios Macres Berbedes, a Greek, pleaded guilty to being in possession of opium suitable for smoking. Counsel for the defence stated that a Chinaman gave acused some - opium to sell. The accused, an ignorant man, with bub little knowledge of English, became frightened and did nothing. He thus had the opium in his possession when -arrested. \ The police stated that the accused was not so simple as was represented, and that he was trying to sell opium, with the value of which he was acquainted, when he was arrested. The accused was fined £50,.and it was ordered that the opium be handed to the customs authorities.
