AUCKLAND SPRING SHOW.
SUCCESS OF PEOPLE'S DA*. ATTENDANCE OF 16,000. ffOWN AND COUNTRY MEET. ' PARADE OF PRIZE STOCK. The annual reunion of town and country was held on Saturday on the Camp-' bell Ground, the occasion being People's Day at the Auckland Metropolitan'. Agricultural and Pastoral Show. The weather conditions were perfect and from morning a stream of traffic set toward Epsom, where the stage was set for the great exhibition of stock and produce from the country, town manufactures and wares, combined with all the fun of the oldfashioned fair. It was the social aspect of the show that was the feature on People's Day. "While a great many were there for the take of the exhibits, as many or more regarded the show as the annual occasion for meeting friends in town or country, of renewing acquaintances and the memories of "auld lane syne," Anywhere on the grounds could be seen such reunions, groups forming and parting, with pleasant exchanges and the barter of small talk. For the children the sidethaw section was the chief attraction and many adults were tempted to taste again, even in this ago of speed, the gentle joys of the merry-go-round. Perhaps it was the associations roused by the ancient songs wheezed out by the organ which accounted for this levity, but it was good to see. Included among visitors to the show were the Atcing-Primo Minister, Sir Francis D. Bell, the Minister for Health, fir Maui Pomare, and the Mayor, Mr. *!. H. Gunson. Attention was focusscd throughout the 'day on events in the ring. The classes for town horses produced such competition as to show that the motor lorry has Tint yet monopolised . the transport field. Tho * free movement of these splendid animals as they drew smart turn-outs round the ring called forth many expressions of admiration. Particularly noteworthy was a four-horse lorry team of ■upstanding greys. The spring-carters and the pairs also made strong classes. Other ring attractions were the riding and driving competitions. . - ■ , ■ But it was the. hunting and jumping events that held the great concourse of people, which arrived after mid-day, close to the ringside. Not only was its circumference crowded two, three and four deep, but the grandstand was packed to capacity. Waves of applause continually rewarded the skill of riders or the pluck of horses.
The most spectacular event was the jgrand parade of livestock. Appropriately enough for the great dairying province, tho general parade was preceded by that of the cattle. The animals made an. impressive showing, all the more ~ so when it. was remembered that here in small space were marshalled tho pick of tho foundation stock of the province. As was to be expected, Jerseys were mist numerous, but Shorthorns. Friesians, and Ayrshires were also well represented. There followed the grand parade, a splendid panoply of horses, their shining beauty enhanced, by • their sense of pride and excitement. The attendance for the day was officially estimated at about 16,000. as against an" estimate of 18,500 last year. The gate takings amounted to £147 19s 6d on the first day and £907 6s Od on the second, making a total of £1055.5s 6d; compared with £1354 last year, a decrease of about £300. The decrease in the attendance is attributed to the late date of the show, and it is the intention of the association to hold the show earlier next year. The traffic arrangements -proved equal to all demands, and visitors were, transported to and from the grounds by an efficient tram service and a fleet of motor buses. '.■-.. -„.... ■"■- ]■
