DAMAGING POWER POLES.

AGED MAORI'S "MISCHIEF."

"A YEAR'S IMPRISONMENT. [IIT TELEGRAPH.— CORRESPONDENT.] HAMILTON. Friday. A sentence of 12 months' imprisonment with hard labour was imposed by Mr. Justice Herdman in the Hamilton' Supremo Court to-day on an aged Maori named Aupaki Henare Roa, who had pleaded guilty to a charge of committing mischief by damaging several electric line poiles at Gordon ton. Accused chopped four poles halfway through and damaged a fifth. They were standing on a public road. Accused said the land on which the poles stood had been dedicated to his forefathers by the Government. His Honor said that the accused had been convicted before for trespass and damage, and had been in prison. He seemed to think he could do what he liked. The road did not belong to the Maoris, who must obey the law as much as the white man. Had a white man done what accused had done the sentence would have ben greater.
