CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE.
The Auckland Women's Christian Temperance Union held a farewell social in the W.C.T.U. Headquarters oi.« Wednesday afternoon, to celebrate the closing of the room. There was a large and enthusiastic gathering. of meimbeaJH Mr*. 'J. Cock presided. Songs were sung by Mrs. Rosser and Miss Peace. Afternoon tea was dispensed. Mrs. Cook fipoke of the forward movement of the union, and announced that arrangements had been completed for the purchase of the hostel in Upper Queen Street, known as the Abbey. A vote on the proposal to incorporate th& Auckland Union was passed unanimously, amid applause. One lady gave a donation of £5 to the hostel fund. Several new members were initiated. Mrs. Reuben Bailey gave the valedictory prayer in connection with the closing of the head quarters. The Ponsonby branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union met this week. Dominion officers for the ensuing year were nominated, and Miss Adams was appointed delegate to the New Plymouth convention. Mrs. Lee Cowie reported the temporary cessation of her wharf meetings owing to other activities occupying her time. On moral grounds a resolution was passed against the retention of black troops on the frontiers of France and Gormajiy.
