COMPANIES' LICENSE FEES.

FINES FOR NON-PAYMENT.

Seventeen prosecutions brought under the Companies Act, for failure to pay the annual license fee required by .the law were heard before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday. Mi. V. Hubble, who appeared for the Crown, emphasised the large amount of extra work entailed by the failure of companies to pay the fee promptly. Fines of 20s, and costs, £3 10$.w imposed in each instance, except in the cases of Kawakawa, and Pio Pio Town Halls, which were ran for the benefit of the communities rather than for profit, and in another case where the firm concerned was no longer a registered company. The majority of the companies concerned were in various country districts.
