SANDERS CUP TESTS.

1 Ideal weather prevailed: on Saturday 1 for the first test races in connection with the selection of the boat to represent Auckland at the next Sanders _ Cup con- ! test, which takes place at Wellington, on January 23. The three boats, Joan, Rona, and Queen March, all took a turn in leading the way at various stages, but in both races the issue was really between l"!ona and Queen March. Joan did well 00 the wind, but her rivals were too good lor her when sheets were flat-, tencd. There was very little between Rona and Queen March and there was always • a doubt- as to which boat would cross the finishing lino first, especially in the second test, when Rona secured the verdict by the narrow margin of one second. The third test will be sailed to-day over a triangular ' course. will assemble off tho end of King's f Wharf, at 1.45 p.in. t"o receive instructions as to the course etc., the raco being timed to start at 2 p.m. Mr. J. S. Wilson, of Wanganui, has decided to enter his; singly step 16fC. hydroplane in the speed races arranged by the Auckland Anniversary Regatta Committee and the New Zealand Power Boat. Association. This boat has a four-cylinder j car engine and is built on the lines of the American flyer, Miss Margaret. New: Boats Launched. i The new 18ft. patiki built by Messrs. j Bailey «'• d Lowe for Mr. ft. Hodgson was launched during the week. She has been named the Mollie and will be a competitor in the Victoria Cruising Club's raco lor the M. and V. classes this ! afternoon. A new 26ft. cruiser built, by Mr. S. Ford tor a resident of Rotorua, took the water last week. This boat is fitted with a motor-car hood and wind screen and is to bo used foe pleasure on tho Juke. The builder has a 1 28ft. launch well underwav for Messrs. ; R. 0. Clark. j The annual ocean races to Tauranga and ! Russell will both start from off the end | of King's Wharf at 4 p.m. on Saturday, J December 22. Entries close with the ! Roval N.Z. Yacht Squadron on December | 19." i The Akarana Yacht Club will hold a cruising race to Awaroa Bay, Waihehe, next, Saturday for yachts and launches and also harbour races for all 14ft. classes. At the request of owners, 16ft. | and 18ft. boats will be allowed to compete jin the cruising race. A social and dance \ will be held in Gordon's Hall in the evening. Entries for all classes close next Wednesday. Anniversary Begatta. The Auckland Anniversary Regatta Committee has been granted the use of j the Calliope Dock and site for regatta i day. At a meeting of the programme i committee this week the preliminary pro- | gramme was drawn up and will bo subI mitted to the general committee for confirmation next Monday. The sailing events are the same as last regatta, but the order of starting is very much different, and an increase in several of the races is also recommended. In fhe first class yacht race it is proposed to increase the first prize from £30 to £25 in addition to the Auckland Harbour Board "Heather' 1 cup. The second prize is £10, the third £5. The prize money in most. of the other races is about the same as last year, with the exception Chat instead of giving trophies as third prizes, money will be paid, while fourth prizes will be given in the races for classes L, Y, ard T. For the first mentioned class Che first prize will be £10 which has been specially donated lor this particular race. The launch events include races for boats over nine knots; . from seven to nine knots; under seven knots, open speed over 12 knots, and a speed race for boats doing over 20' knots. For t3ie last named event A prize of £25 will be given to the boat doing the fastest time, and a further prize of £30 to the winner on handicap. In the event of there being an Australian or an interprovincial com- | petitor, the boat putting up the fastest time will receive a farther prize of £30.

POWER-BOAT ASSOCIATION.

FIRST HARBOUR RACES.

Four races will be held by the New Zealand Power-Boat Association this afternoon. The course is from starting line between end of King's Wharf and launch Luana, thence round Resolution buoy, round Sandspit to finishing line; once round for each race. Marks to be kept on port hand; distance 3£ knots. The first race will be a general handicap for all club launches. The Lunn Cup will also be ran, in which boats must be steered by a returned soldier or sailor. A race in which all entrants must be steered by ladies will be decided, and also an open speed-boat race. The entries and handicaps, for the general handicap, which will start at 2.45 p.m., are as follows: Auckland, scr.; Miss Northcote, 3|m.; Tarua, 10m. 15s. ; Cyrena, 11m. 455.; Valeka, 13m. 305.; Esther G., 14m.; Aumoe, 16m. 155.; Duchess. 16m. 165.; Marion D., 17m. 155.; Leitner, 17m. 155.; Adelaide, 19m. 455. ; Nairobi, 22m.; Wailani, 22m. 15s. In the Lunn Cup, which will , start at 3.30 p.m., the entries are the same, but the boats will be rehandicapped where necessary. The ladies" race will start at 4.15 p.m., the entries being the same as in the general handicap. This race will also be rehandicapped. ' The speed race will start at 5 p.m., the entries being Miss Auckland and Miss Northcote (a new 21-footer). The officers for the day will be:— Starter, Mr. S. H. Leyland; judge, Mr. F. Chapman, timekeepers, Messrs. E. L. Buchanan and A. J. Collings. After the races a tea and social evening will be held in the clubhouse, and to-morrow morning the club boat<i will proceed in company to Pine Island.

TAKAPUNA BOATING CLUB. The Takapuna Boating Club will hold a race for its 12ft. 6in. one-design class this afternoon over the usual course, starting at 3 p.m. The entries are: — Winsome, -Tio, Sport, Barbara, and Myrth.

INTER-CLUB MATCHES TO-DAY

The ii'ter-club tennis matches under the auspicies of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association will be played to-day. In the A grade, Remuera meet Marine Suburbs, at Stanley Street courts. In the B prrade, Mount Albert play Auckland, at Stanley Street. Birkenhead and Northcote meet Devonport at Birkenhead. In the C orade, Remilera play Mount Albert, at Mount Albert court, and Onehunga play Papatoetoe, at Stanley Street.

BOWLING.

TE AROHA TOURNAMENT. [by telegraph. ■■OWN correspondent.] TfJ AKOHA. Friday. This year's annual bowling tournament, which takes place at New Year time, promises to bo most successful. Already many teams have entered, and the committee anticipates that considerably more than 32—the maximum number which can be accommodated on the rinks— nominate. If this so happens preference will be given in order of nomination.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS TO • DAY. j

The. club championship competitions under the auspices of the Auckland Cricket Association will be continued today, when the third round of the first grade matches will be played. The match between Parnell and Grafton will be played on No. 1 wicket, at Eden Park. Eden will meet University on No. 2 wicket at Eden Park, and Ponsonby ■ will play North Shore at Bevonport. The wickets are in excellent order, with fast outfields, and the conditions should be specially favourable. Junior matches in the second, third and fourth grades, will also be continued. With tjie continuance of fine weather good scores should be recorded.

SUBURBAN ASSOCIATION.

MATCHES TO-DAY.

The second round of the club championship matches, under tho auspices of the Auckland Suburban Association will be opened to-day. In the first grade Ponsonby will play R.V. pn the No. 3 ground at tho Domain; Y.M.C.A. meet Harbour Board on No. 2, and Unity play Ellerslie on No. 1. The junior matches of the Suburban Association will also be continue'd today.

MILITARY MATCHES TO-DAY.

THE AUCKLAND CLUB.

The Auckland Rowing Club will row trial fours for trophies presented by the commodore, Mr. H. Cleal, to-day. The course should be* favourable, provided no wind is experienced, and the races promise to be closely contested.

ST. GEORGE'S CLUB. The St. George's Rowing Club holds its at Home in the club-houso this afternoon. An interesting programme of rowing and general aquatic events has been arranged, introduced by a procession of boats. The proceedings will open at 2.30 p.m. With fine weather an enjoyable fixture will bo conducted.

SWIMMING.

MT. EDEN CLUB'S CARNIVAL.

HANDICAPS DECLARED.

The Mount Eden Swimming Club -will hold its opening carnival on Monday evening, at the Mount Eden Baths. An interesting programme of events has been arranged. Mr. R. B. Anderson will give a display of fantastic swimming, and Mr. Con Welson an exhibition of diving. The proceeds go toward the fund for the improvement of the Kowhai school ground, being credited to the Mount Eden School Princess.

The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £63, which amount is increased by assets to approximately £140. The revenue for the year was £286.. It wan decided to change thevsite of the links from the showgrounds back to the racecourse. The following officers were elected: — Patron, Mr. C. E. Macmillan, M.P. ; president, Mr. R. L. Somers; captain, Mr. C. A.. Arthur ; ladies' captain, Mrs. C. A. Arthur; vice-captain, Mr- J. P. Somers; vice-presidents, Messrs. F. Bliss arid W. W. Maingay; committee, Messrs. F. Dewhirst, W.
