POSTAL OFFICERS' GRIEVANCE

REFERENCE TO GOVERNMENT

Following the refusal of the Government to sanction the affiliation of the Post and Telegraph Association to the Alliance of Labour, the association at! dressed a petition to His Majesty the King, proposing that he should " instruct the New Zealand Postmaster-General to lift the embargo he has placed against our affiliation with the New Zealand Alliance of Labour on the grounds that his doing so exceeds his authority, and as a consequence takes away the constitutional rights of certain of your loyal subjects." The association's journal, Katipo, states that a reply has been received from the Governor-General as follows: —"His Excellency is requested by the Secretary of Slate to cause ; you to be informed, in .reply, that the petition was duly received by the King, but that His Majesty was not pleased to give any directions! with regard to the subject matter, which.lies within the exclusive competence of the Government of New Zealand." The matter has been considered by the executive of the association, which proposes to reopen the question with the Government
