CLEANING MATTING.
Japanese matting which has become discoloured should be well brushed, and then rubbed with a strong solution of salt and water. This whitens the matting and will also to a certain extent bring up the colours in the pattern. A good effect may be secured by painting over the design with hat varnish dye of a suitable shade. The work is interesting and not at all difficult to carry out, and much improves the appearance of the matting.
