GRANTS TO RELIEVE DISTRESS
NOT LIABLE FOR COMPENSATION.
[BY. TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPO..BENT.J ■ ';■ WELLINGTON. Wednesday. Grants in relief of hardship arising out of the Ongarue disaster on July 6 have been made by the Railway. Department. Replying to an inquiry to-day, an official stated that the department has not paid anything by way of compensation, being under no liability to do so. It has. however, paid ■ ,rtain small sums by way of compassionate allowance to tide people over their immediate necessity. These payments; have been . confined to cases of genuine hardship arising out of the accident. ', • ' ; ;
