TRAMWAY SMOKE NUISANCE.

. The Takapuna Borough Council met last evening. There were present, the Mayor, Mr. A. M. Gould, and Messrs. J. Collins, F. E. N. Gaudin, F. W. • Suckling, M. E. Thompson, E. G. Tucker, A. H. Bousie, of the Mill Ratepayers' Association, as to the smoke nuisance arising from the Tramway Company's engines, it was resolved, on the recommendation of the Public Services Committee, that the company be required, under the provisions of the Public Health Act, to] abate the nuisance. " ' ."/.'"* t ' v .- / s , u A recommendation was made by the Public Sen-ices Committee that when interest from the drainage loan is collected all persons, living outside , the area connected with the reticulation, be entitled to have the sanitary service at half the present charge. It was resolved that the concession .be extended by. giving such persons the service free of charge. The Milford • Ratepayers' Association wrote asking the council's approval of an arrangement with the "Tramway Company that certain cars now running via Hurstrncre Road should, instead., run via North- . cote Road. The proposal was approved. Building permits were granted in respect of works estimated to cost £11,570, including 18 new dwellings. t A resolution was passed directing „ the Tramway Company that when a breakdown occurs on the' tramline, the steamer from Bayswater should be despatched according to time-table. ~ An amended plan for the Bayswater baths, providing for enlargement of the width of the bathing basin ' from 35ft. to 40{i., was, approved, end tenders were ordered to be invited for the work. The executors of the estate of the late Captain Smith offered to the council an area of 33 acres other than that it proposes to acquire as. a recreation, ground. On the recommendation. of the Finance Committee, however, the council decided that it could not at present acquire any more land. ..'■ ' A letter was received from the executors of the estate of the late Mr. J. J. Craig confirming a previous offer, to sell for park purposes two lots fronting Milford Beach,' with 66ft. frontage each, at £1056. These terms the Mayor had accepted, subject to the authorisation of the necessary loan by* the ratepayers. : With regard to the proposed acquisition of quarry property at Milford, 'a letter was read from Mr- R. Williams placing definitely under offer two allotments on Omana * Road, at £1600, adjoining the purchase already arranged for, subject, again, to approval' of the proposal ', at the ratepayers' poll on December 11. -,'
