WORKERS' DWELLINGS.

THE WARD SYSTEM.

The Avondale Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. W. J. Tait, presiding. There was also present: Messrs." | A. E. Blackman; T. Wilson, A. P. Haslam, H. Potter, J.' W. Thompson^J. B. Clarke, J. V. , Riesterer and C. E. Fearon. In reply to the council's application for a re-valuation of the borough, the ValuerGeneral stated that owing to pressure of. business no promise could be given that the re-valuation could be undertaken .;'• in time for the rates to be struck for the year 1925-26. ' It was decided to enlist the aid of the Hons. C. J. Parr and R. F. Bollard, with a view to expediting matters so that a re-valuation roll would be available when the borough adopts the ward system in April next. "^ ■'The' Hon. R. F. Bollard wrote on behalf of the Minister for Finance in connection with the council's suggestion that Avondale was a suitable district in which to erect'.,workers' dwellings. The, Minister stated that the Government had discontinued the 'erection of workers' i dwellings, but he . suggested that the council should undertake the erection of houses, money for which couM v he i obtained under the Advances to Local Bodies Act, at the rate of 44 per cent. -It was resolved to , obtain all the '■ information possible, several of the councillors expressing themselves in favour of taking up the suggestion.,.. .. - ," An invitation from- the Te Atatu Bridge Committee, to visit Te Atatu on Saturday and inspect the route of the proposed bridge over the Whan $Creek and proposed road leading thereto, was accepted. $ The building inspector reported that during the previous . fortnight nine permits had .been granted.
