NOTES FROM WAIMANA.

RAILWAY DRAWING NEAR.

[BY TELEGEAFH.OWN COBBESPONMNT.] , ~;'WAIMANA. Wednesday. The opening of another 12 miles of the East Coast Trunk Railway, between Matata and Awakeri on Tuesday last, for passenger traffic, brings the rail head within 18 miles of Waimana. There was no public ceremony, to celebrate the opening, of this extension across the Rangitaiki Plains, but no doubt there will be an important function early in the coming year, when another nine miles of line will be opened to the; Taneatua station. Most of the Taneatua section is now laid with the permanent rails. The making of the concrete piles for the bridge over the river is well in hand and driving will be started very shortly. '" . ; t " If local, residents are to continue to do business , with Auckland through the parcel mail service, something will have to be done in "the way of speeding up delivery at this end. On many occasions during the past year, it has taken the | Postal Department 10 to 14 days to deliver parcels after they have been posted in Auckland, * and recently it took 16. days to get parcels through to this office. Cargo shipped by the A.V. Motn .to Kutarero Wharf has arrived at the Waimana township within 24 hours after leaving Auckland, and there is no reason why the Postal Department should take any longer. ~ The motor traffic along the main highway through this district continues to increase at a great rate. In addition to the cars of three motor companies, which run through every morning and evening, a . tri-weekly service, between Gisborne and the railhead at Awakeri, has been started. These here at 2 p.m., and passengers leaving here at this hour arrive in Auckland in' time for breakfast next morning.
