BUILDING OF THREE STOREYS

CONTRACT LET FOR £24,344.

A contract for £24,344 has been let to Mr. W. H. Whittaker, of Hamilton, for the erection of a new Public Trust office buildinp in Hamilton. The building, which will be of three storeys, will iwve a frontage of 50ft. to Victoria Street, and a. depth of 100 ft. to the adjoining right-rf-way, and will take 12 months to complete. The main entrance will give access to a marble-lined entrance hall, at the end of which are the main doors to the Public Trust office, and the stairs leading to the upper floors. The floor and tho walls to a height of 7ft. will be lined with black and light grey marble. The whole building is to be constructed in reinforced concrete, with a flat roof covered with natural asphalt. The window frames and sashes will bo of steel.

The exterior has been designed after the manner of the American bank and trust office buildings, which are the admiration of the architectural profession the world over. The front has been divided into three bays by two fluted lonic columns 35ft. high, and is flanked by wide piers in the angles. The windows will have modelled copper panels between the first and second floor. As the elevation to the right-of-way will be seen from Victoria Street, the treatment of the front has been continued round the side by means of flat pilasters. The elevations will be finished in Atlas white cement.

Messrs. Gray, Young. Morton and Young, of Wellington, are the architects for the building.
